Geron gains as imetelstat studies proceed

Geron Corp. (NASDAQ:GERN) gained $0.42 (20%) to $2.57 after it said two studies of imetelstat (GRN163L) to treat myelofibrosis (MF) and myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) will continue without modifications. The company said its partner, the Janssen Biotech Inc. unit of Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ), has yet to determine whether it will continue development of the programs beyond upcoming milestones.

Geron said a joint steering committee's internal review of data from the Phase II IMbark study to treat MF "suggest a potential overall survival benefit," but did not disclose study data. The company said it observed improvements in anemia, peripheral blood counts and overall symptom scores, but the spleen volume response rate was lower than that previously observed in studies of first-line MF treatments...
