U.K. Biobank debuts, names Rawlins chairman

The U.K. Biobank said its database of medical and lifestyle information culled from 500,000 volunteers is now available for medical research. The Biobank also appointed Sir Michael Rawlins as chairman. Rawlins, who is also chairman of the U.K.'s NICE, succeeds Sir Alan Langlands.

The Biobank is open to scientists worldwide, including those from academia, industry, charity or government agencies. Scientists must register and submit plans for their research, which will then be reviewed and approved by the Biobank.
