Researchers report in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that genetically engineered Arabidopsis thaliana plants, expressing modified bacterial mercuric ion reductase (MerA), converted significantly more mercury to its less toxic form than did control plants. The modified plants grew well in media containing normally toxic levels of mercury. Genetically modified plants also were more resistant to toxic levels of gold.

The results highlight the potential for phytoremediation of metal pollution in soil, researchers noted. ...
