Jackson Lab researchers and colleagues published in Nature Genetics the cloning of the gene mutated in stargazer mice, which experience seizures similar to absence epilepsy. The gene, Cacng2, encodes a brain-specific voltage-gated calcium channel subunit called stargazin. The researchers said that the defect in stargazer mice may result from unregulated calcium entry into neurons and that stargazin may be a target to treat epilepsy and other neuroexcitability disorders. ...
