Industry research contributes to Nobel Prize for HCV discovery

While the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine has historically been awarded to academic scientists, this year’s recipients — a trio behind the discovery of hepatitis C virus — include a former Chiron Corp. researcher. 

The prize was split by Harvey Alter, Michael Houghton and Charles Rice for a series of discoveries spanning three decades that led to the identification of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) that had been spreading undetected through blood transfusions. ...
