Researchers published in The Journal of Clinical Investigation a pharmacogenetic study that provides evidence for a gene that may contribute to diabetic patients' varied responses to metformin. By combining studies in cell culture, knockout mice and healthy volunteers, researchers from the University of California, San Francisco, and GlaxoSmithKline (LSE:GSK; GSK) showed that organic cation transporter 1 (OCT1) is important in mediating the therapeutic effects of metformin.
