UC group issued foundational CRISPR patent in U.S.

The USPTO issued to The Regents of the University of California, the University of Vienna and Emmanuelle Charpentier the core foundational CRISPR patent that was involved in a patent interference case between the UC Regents group and the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard over ownership of CRISPR gene editing technology. The patent is the fourth issued to the UC group in the U.S.

U.S. Patent No. 10,266,850 covers systems and methods for use of single molecule guide RNAs combined with the Cas9 protein to modify target DNA in any setting, including in vitro and in cells. In February, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office issued a notice of allowance for the patent application, U.S. Patent Application No. 13/842,859, at the center of the dispute with the Broad Institute (see "USPTO to Grant UC Foundational CRISPR patent")...
