Fruit fly studies suggest promoting BMPRI or BMP7 expression could help treat ALS. In a Drosophila model of ALS expressing mutant SOD1, overexpression of the Drosophila ortholog of human BMPRI in glutamatergic and cholinergic neurons or overexpression of the Drosophila ortholog of human BMP7 in motor neurons decreased disease-associated motor deficits compared with normal BMPRI and BMP7 expression. Next steps include promoting BMPRI or BMP7 expression in mouse models of ALS.
