Mouse studies suggest a topical pyridine-2-aldoxime-based gel could help treat pesticide poisoning. The gel contains pyridine-2-aldoxime, which reverses binding and inactivation of AChE by pesticides, linked via an acetamide bridge to chitosan to functionalize it as a gel. In a mouse model of pesticide poisoning, topical application of the gel on the back decreased salivation, tremors, muscular fibrillation, muscle spasms and other markers of neuromuscular dysfunction and increased body temperature, weight, neuromuscular coordination, sciatic nerve function, muscular endurance and survival compared with vehicle. Next steps could include optimizing and testing the gel in humans...
