Why SOX2 and PITX1 could help treat chronic, non-healing wounds

In a Science Translational Medicine paper published last month, an NIH team showed SRY (sex determining region Y)-box 2 (SOX2) and paired-like homeodomain 1 (PITX1) can activate wound healing, and is now evaluating the transcription factors’ potential for treating chronic non-healing wounds.

While products approved and in development for wound healing include local application of recombinant growth factors, the standard of care for acute and chronic wounds remains cleaning and dressing the wound site; acute wound treatment may also include antibiotics (see “Wound-up Bacteria”). ...
