Redfield named CDC director

HHS Secretary Alex Azar named Robert Redfield director of CDC and administrator of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR). He succeeds Anne Schuchat, who has been serving as acting CDC director since Brenda Fitzgerald departed in January.

Redfield is a professor at University of Maryland School of Medicine, where he served as chief of infectious diseases and vice chair of medicine and co-founded the university's Institute of Human Virology.
