OHSU's Knight Cancer Institute nets $1B

The Knight Cancer Institute at Oregon Health & Science University said it raised $500 million, triggering a matching $500 million gift from Nike Inc. co-founder Philip Knight and his wife, Penny. The university met its goal more than seven months ahead of the Knights' two-year fund-raising deadline, according to Tomasz Beer, deputy director of the Knight Institute.

The state of Oregon provided $200 million, while Columbia Sportswear Chairman Gert Boyle gave $100 million. Beer told BioCentury the funds would support research in early cancer detection, but would not disclose specific targets.
