Therapeutics: Peroxisome proliferation activated receptor γ (PPARγ)

Mouse studies suggest PPARγ agonists could help treat cognitive deficits associated with congenital lipodystrophy. Hippocampal levels of PPARγ were lower in two mouse models of congenital lipodystrophy than in normal mice. In hippocampal slices from one model, the PPARγ agonist Avandia rosiglitazone increased synaptic function compared with vehicle. In both models, Avandia increased spatial memory. Next steps could include testing the long-term effects of PPARγ agonists in models of congenital lipodystrophy. ...
