Thinning the uterine wall

Aromatase inhibitors are used as chronic treatments in postmenopausal women with estrogen-receptive breast cancer. But given their mechanism of action - which is to inhibit the aromatase enzyme that converts certain androgens to estrogen - Meditrina Pharmaceuticals Inc. thinks they could be used to pre-thin the endometrium prior to ablation in women with abnormal uterine bleeding.

During the reproductive years, estrogen interacts with other hormones to control the menstrual cycle, including the growth of the endometrium, which is the lining of the uterus. In women who suffer from abnormal uterine bleeding and in order to achieve optimal patient outcomes in terms of stopping periods completely or significantly reducing their volume, the full thickness of the endometrium must be removed to prevent regrowth and recurrent bleeding. ...
