Alabama spinout

Brookwood Pharmaceuticals Inc. spun out of the Southern Research Institute last week with a built-in revenue stream from existing collaborations, which it will use to leverage its experience in developing time-release delivery formulations, along with a newly acquired polymer manufacturing business from Alkermes Inc.

The non-profit Southern Research Institute, which is affiliated with the University of Alabama-Birmingham, does preclinical discovery and development work for both the public and private sector. The organization has discovered six cancer drugs that have made it to market through partners. The most recent of these, clofarabine, was approved last month to treat pediatric acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) and is marketed as Clolar in the U.S. by Genzyme (GENZ, Cambridge, Mass.)...
