New frontier: Animal health

Summa Investments and Brakke Consulting have formed SBC Ventures, a venture-type fund that will invest in animal health and pet care technologies. The fund hopes to raise $100 million to invest in science-driven technologies such as value added poultry, swine, cattle and other specialty animals, while leaving the door open for low tech opportunities such as veterinary practice management and pet foods.

General partners for the fund include Ronald Brakke, Viviana Cloninger and David Stevens. Stevens, a founder and former CEO of Deprenyl Animal Health, which was acquired in 1996 by parent Draxis Health (DRAXF), feels there are opportunities in animal health that are being left by the wayside...
