Salmedix: Fast track for hand-me-downs

David Kabakoff didn't want to wait 10 years to have a drug. He took the start-from-scratch route as head of Corvas International Inc. in 1989, but at this point in his career he wanted something that would bring results faster.

He was persuaded to become chairman and CEO of Salmedix Inc., an in-licensing and development startup, by his friend Dennis Carson, a professor of medicine at the University of California at San Diego. Carson has started several companies, including Vical Inc. (VICL), Triangle Pharmaceuticals Inc.
