Senate snubs Kennedy, pushes PDUFA vote

WASHINGTON - The Senate on Friday overwhelmingly passed a cloture motion limiting further debate about S. 830, the Food and Drug Administration Modernization & Accountability Act, setting the stage for a vote on the measure as early as Tuesday.

The bill reauthorizes the Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA) and mandates reforms of the agency.

Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-Miss.) scheduled the cloture vote in response to threats by Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.) to use parliamentary maneuvers to delay consideration of the legislation.
