In vitro studies suggest clomiphene could help treat Staphylococcus aureus infection. A screen of 1,600 FDA-approved drugs in S. aureus culture found that clomiphene inhibited bacterial growth with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 8 μg/mL and inhibited bacterial uppS activity with an IC50 of 7.5 μM. In methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) cultures, clomiphene plus each of nine β-lactam antibiotics decreased bacterial growth compared with any agent alone.
