Mouse studies suggest gadolinium porphyrinates could be useful as photodynamic therapy (PDT) agents to treat cancer. In mice bearing cervical carcinoma xenograft tumors, intratumoral injection of the agent followed by exposure to 860 nm light decreased tumor volume compared with no light exposure or injection of a gadolinium-free PDT agent.
