CDC backs Truvada for HIV prevention

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published interim guidance recommending the use of HIV drug Truvada emtricitabine/tenofovir from Gilead Sciences Inc. (NASDAQ:GILD) as a pre-exposure prophylaxis to prevent HIV infection in men who have sex with men. The guidance cited data from the previously reported Phase III iPrEx trial, in which Truvada met the primary endpoint of significantly reducing the incidence of HIV infection vs. placebo in HIV-seronegative men who have sex with men. The fixed-dose combination of the nucleoside analog reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTI) emtricitabine and tenofovir is not approved to prevent HIV. ...
