AciPhex rabeprazole regulatory update

FDA issued an alert to healthcare professionals that the use of prescription and OTC proton pump inhibitors (PPI) may cause hypomagnesemia if taken for prolonged periods of time, in most cases longer than 1 year. The agency recommended that clinicians obtain serum magnesium levels before starting and periodically during treatment with PPIs in patients expected to be on the treatment for long periods of time, as well as in patients who take PPIs with digoxin, diuretics and other drugs that may cause hypomagnesemia. ...
