Researchers at MIT published in Science the ability of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, a species of yeast for which the genome has been sequenced, to produce a biofilm as evidenced by adherence to plastic. The scientists then created mutant strains lacking FLO11, a gene required for yeast adherence to agar, or FLO8, a gene coding for a protein that regulates FLO11 expression. Neither mutant strain adhered well to plastic, suggesting that they are required for biofilm production. ...
