RCEPF and collaborators presented histologic evidence that Coenzyme Q10, an inhibitor of free radicals, protects cells from death after experimentally induced stroke in animals. CoQ10 was given to the animals at various time points and the degree of cell death was assessed in sections of brain tissue. At 144 hours after occlusion, a mean of 90 percent of hippocampal neurons underwent apoptosis in 7 control animals versus 50 percent in 3 treated animals. ...
