ALTN and collaborators published the pharmacologic action of ALT-766, an agent that cleaves the abnormal links among proteins in diabetes and could also have a role in Alzheimer's.
An over-abundance of blood sugar in diabetics leads to a build-up of AGEs, which cross-links proteins in connective tissue. ALT-766 can sever the links, as reported in Nature. Rats with established diabetes who were injected daily with ALT-766 had less IgG bound to their red blood cells, with less bound over time (60 percent less at four weeks, p<0.001). Diabetic rats have about five times as much IgG bound to red blood cells as normal rats. ...
