DENSPM alters the metabolic processes in cancer cells by depleting them of polyamines, compounds which contain two or more amino acid groups. Rapidly growing cells, such as cancer cells, have a higher requirement for polyamines and are therefore more sensitive than normal cells to DENSPM, a polyamine analog invented at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Stephan Borg, president and CEO of SunPharm, told BioCentury that the marketing rights exclude Japan because SunPharm plans to market DENSPM there with a Japanese development and marketing partner.
