The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative said it will invest more than $3 billion over 10 years in an effort to cure, manage or prevent all diseases by the end of the century. Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg founded the philanthropic initiative last year. In a presentation in San Francisco, Chan said the initiative aims to use collaborations among scientists, physicians, engineers and universities to “build transformational tools that unlock a new era of accelerated progress in science and health.” Chan said the Initiative will invest $600 million in Biohub, a San Francisco-based center focused on building new tools to understand and treat disease. Biohub will include scientists from Stanford University, the University of California Berkeley and University of California San Francisco, along with an engineering team.

UCSF Professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics Joe DeRisi and Stanford Professor of Bioengineering and Applied Physics Stephen Quake will be the center’s co-leaders. At the presentation, Quake said Biohub’s first project is to develop a “cell atlas” to map cell types and characterize molecular interactions within individual cells.
