Eli Lilly said a labor court in Brazil ordered the company to pay about $450 million in a case alleging employees were exposed to hazardous materials at Lilly's manufacturing facility between 1977 and 2003. The company plans to appeal the ruling, saying the alleged chemicals - benzene and heavy metals - were never used in manufacturing operations at the facility and that the ruling contains inaccurate scientific claims and mathematical errors. The ruling came from the Second Circuit of the Labor Court of Paulinia in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Separately, the pharma said the English High Court ruled that Actavis plc (NYSE:ACT, Dublin, Ireland) would not infringe a U.K. patent covering the vitamin dosage regimen of Alimta pemetrexed. The court also said that Actavis would not infringe vitamin dosage Alimta patents in France, Italy and Spain. Actavis plans to market generic formulations of Alimta in Europe after the Alimta compound patents expire in 2015. Lilly plans to appeal the ruling. ...
