Mouse and cell culture studies suggest decreasing extracellular DNA levels could help prevent pancreatic cancer metastasis. In two human pancreatic cancer cell lines, compared with normal pancreatic cells, extracellular DNA levels in culture medium were increased. In a mouse xenograft model for human pancreatic cancer, injection of DNase I decreased metastasis compared with saline injection. Next steps include determining whether extracellular DNA is associated with pancreatic cancer metastasis in humans.
