NADP-dependent malic enzyme 1 cytosolic (ME1); NADP-dependent malic enzyme 2 mitochondrial (ME2); p53

Cell culture and mouse studies suggest inhibiting ME1 or ME2 may help treat cancer. In mice injected with a human colorectal cancer cell line, pretreatment with anti-ME1 or anti-ME2 small interfering RNA decreased tumor growth compared with pretreatment using control siRNA. Next steps include developing small molecule inhibitors of ME1 and ME2.
