Patient sample and mouse studies suggest TREM1 inhibitors could help treat atherosclerosis. In aortic tissue samples from 21 patients, high TREM expression was associated with disease severity. In a mouse model of atherosclerosis, knockout of TREM1 decreased atherosclerotic lesion size and systemic monocytosis - a contributor to severe plaque formation - compared with normal TREM1 expression. Next steps could include testing TREM1 inhibitors in atherosclerosis models.
