Unfolded protein response

Studies in mice suggest compounds that activate the unfolded protein response could help treat type 1 diabetes. In two mouse models of the disease, tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA), a naturally occurring bile salt that stimulates the unfolded protein response, improved glycemic control and increased pancreatic islet b cell survival compared with vehicle. Next steps could include clinical development of TUDCA and related compounds.
