Pulmonary disease

Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD)

IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1RA)

Mouse studies suggest IL-1RA could help treat BPD. In a mouse model of BPD, IL-1RA prevented or decreased lung inflammation and alveolar destruction compared with vehicle. In the model, IL-1RA partially prevented disease-associated decreases in immune cell levels and increases in proinflammatory cytokine levels. Next steps include testing the strategy in human infants who have BPD.
