Transmembrane protein 8c (TMEM8C; myomaker)

In vitro and mouse studies suggest TMEM8C could enhance muscle repair. In mice, Tmem8c deletion prevented fusion of myoblasts and formation of multinucleated muscle fibers. In mice with sustained muscle injuries, Tmem8c was upregulated during muscle regeneration. In cultured muscle cells, retrovirus-mediated overexpression of Tmem8c increased myoblast fusion compared with normal expression. Next steps could include testing the effect of Tmem8c overexpression on muscle regeneration in vivo.
