Muscular atrophy

SET and MYND domain containing 3 (SMYD3)

Cell culture and mouse studies suggest inhibiting SMYD3 could help prevent steroid-induced muscular atrophy. In mouse skeletal muscle and myoblast cells, small hairpin RNA against Smyd3 increased myotube size compared with scrambled shRNA. In mice, shRNA knockdown of Smyd3 decreased dexamethasone-induced loss of skeletal muscle compared with no knockdown. Next steps could include screening for inhibitors of SMYD3 and evaluating them in muscular atrophy models.
