Depression

Glucocorticoid receptor (GCCR)

Mouse studies suggest targeting GCCR-mediated modulation of neurogenesis could help prevent or treat stress-induced depression. Adrenal glucocorticoids are secreted in response to stress. In mice subjected to social defeat stress, adrenalecotomized animals had greater hippocampal neurogenesis and better resistance to the development of depressive behaviors than sham-operated control animals. Next steps include determining whether modulating neurogenesis will be sufficient to alter mood.
