Prominin 1 (PROM1; CD133)

Mouse studies suggest oncolytic measles viruses engineered to target CD133 could help treat cancer. CD133 is a marker of stem cells and is highly expressed in many cancers. In mice bearing CD133-expressing human hepatocellular carcinoma, a CD133-targeted oncolytic measles virus decreased tumor growth and increased survival compared with a nontargeted measles virus. Next steps include testing the strain in additional tumor types and developing viruses that target additional tumor markers.
