Human studies suggest genomic profiling of gut microbiota might help predict risk for type 2 diabetes. A genomics analysis of gut microbiota found a smaller population of butyrate-producing bacteria and a higher population of opportunistic pathogens in patients with diabetes than in healthy individuals. In the same study group and in an additional cohort of Chinese patients with diabetes and controls, a panel of 50 microbiota gene markers correctly distinguished between patients with diabetes and healthy individuals. Ongoing work includes validation of the microbiota markers in additional cohorts of patients with diabetes and control subjects.
