Enterobactin-mediated delivery of b-lactam antibiotics

The siderophore enterobactin could be useful for enhancing the delivery of b-lactam antibiotics to Gram-negative bacteria. In cultures of pathogenic Escherichia coli, enterobactin conjugated to the b-lactam antibiotic ampicillin showed up to 1,000-fold greater antibacterial activity than free ampicillin. Next steps include developing the approach for other pathogenic bacteria.
