Mouse model of hemolytic anemia induced by malaria drugs

A mouse model of hemolytic anemia could be useful for evaluating the tolerability of antimalarial compounds. Marketed antimalarial 8-aminoquinoline (8-AQ) compounds cause hemolytic anemia in patients with inherited glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency. In immunocompromised mice engrafted with human G6PD-deficient erythrocytes, compared with mice engrafted with normal erythrocytes, the 8-AQ compound primaquine increased hemolysis and anemia. Next steps include collaborating with Medicines for Malaria Venture, a philanthropic organization, to test the tolerability of malaria therapeutic candidates in the model.
