Noninvasive, 3D imaging of
retinal and choroidal vasculature using phase-variance optical coherence
noninvasive method to image vasculature in the eye could help monitor
treatment responses and diagnose patients who have age-related macular degeneration
(AMD) and other choroidal vascular diseases. The method couples noninvasive,
high-resolution optical coherence tomography with phase variance-based
analysis to generate 3D images of vasculature and circulation in the retina
and three outermost layers of the choroid of the human eye. In the eye of a
patient with AMD who had geographic atrophy, the imaging method identified
vascular abnormalities in the retina and choroid and distinguished between
healthy and atrophic regions of the macula. Next steps could include using
the method to monitor treatment responses in patients who have AMD.
