U.K. mulls therapeutic cloning

U.K. researchers may soon be allowed to conduct human cloning procedures for therapeutic purposes. A U.K. government advisory panel of experts, led by Liam Donaldson, chief medical officer in England, recommended that British researchers should have limited powers to conduct research necessary to develop therapeutic cloning, which involves the generation of cloned human embryos from which cells or tissues can be derived to treat various diseases. The British government has offered its support to the proposal, however a final decision on the issue will be left to a free vote of Members of Parliament. The government also is expected to bring forward legislation to reinforce the ban on human cloning for reproductive purposes. ...
