Greenpeace releases GMO grocery list

Greenpeace released a guide for shoppers on Wednesday listing foods that are likely to contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and products that manufacturers claim are GMO-free. Greenpeace campaigner Charles Margulis said that the list is intended to generate consumer demand in the U.S. for GMO-free products. Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) told reporters that "Greenpeace is performing a public service" by publishing the list. "One lesson we've learned from the Kraft recall (of taco shells containing GMO corn that was not approved for human consumption) is that we must rely on consumer and food safety organizations to police our food safety laws because regulators are unable or unwilling to do it." The Grocery Manufacturers of America, which represents major food companies, said the Greenpeace list "conveniently forgets an important point--(GMO) products are substantially the same and as safe as conventionally produced foods and beverages." ...
