FDA biofood protocol

FDA announced plans today to require pre-market notification of plans to market a bioengineered food and to make the currently voluntary reviews of bioengineered foods mandatory. The agency also plans to draft guidelines for the voluntary labeling of foods that do not contain bioengineered ingredients.
FDA said that its rules are intended to strengthen consumer confidence in biotech foods and are not a reflection of concerns about safety. "FDA's scientific review continues to show that all bioengineered foods sold in the United States today are as safe as their non-bioengineered counterparts," FDA Commissioner Jane Henney stated. ...
