NAS releases GM plant report

Washington -- The National Academy of Sciences on Wednesday released a report on genetically modified pest-protectant plants that broadly endorses current U.S. government regulatory policies. The report states that there is no evidence that transgenic plants are harmful to human health or the environment, and recommends steps the government should take to improve the regulation of biotech crops.

The consensus of the NAS committee, which included an Environmental Defense Fund scientist, was that modern biotechnology does not create unique safety or environmental risks, and regulation should focus on specific products, rather than on the processes used to create them. ...
