GMO food bill introduced

Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) has introduced legislation, "The Genetically Engineered Food Safety Act," that would require extensive testing of genetically engineered foods. Under the program no new genetically engineered foods could be approved for marketing until they are subjected to the full range of tests required for new food additives.

The Kucinich bill would impose user fees to pay for the testing, which would be done by independent laboratories. The bill also would require FDA to conduct a public comment period of at least 30 days for each new product, once safety studies are available to the public. It also requires FDA to maintain a publicly available registry of genetically engineered foods for which food additive approvals are pending or have been approved. ...
