Kavli, universities, NIH award $138M for neuroscience

The Kavli Foundation and academic partners said Tuesday they would invest more than $100 million in neuroscience research that supports the goals of President Obama's Brain Research through Application of Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) initiative. In parallel, National Institute of Mental Health Director Tom Insel announced more than $38 million in new NIH awards to support BRAIN initiative projects.

The majority of the Kavli funding will support the formation of three new neuroscience institutes: The Kavli Neuroscience Discovery Institute at The Johns Hopkins University, the Kavli Neural Systems Institute at The Rockefeller University and the Kavli Institute for Fundamental Neuroscience at the University of California San Francisco. The institutes will study the relationship between brain and behavior, the brain as a neural system supporting complex cognitive functions and the balance between brain plasticity and stability. Each institute will receive a $20 million endowment, with equal contributions from Kavli and the university partner, plus start-up funding. ...
