Researchers at Lund University reported data from a meta-analysis of 3,610 Type II diabetics showing that carriers of the E23K variant of the potassium channel Kir6.2 (KCNJ11) gene had significantly increased rates of total mortality (42% vs. 39.5%, p=0.02) and cardiovascular (CV) mortality (44.5% vs. 39.5%, p=0.0006) compared to patients who were not carriers of the E23K variant. A second meta-analysis of 5,469 Type II diabetics showed that carriers of the E23K variant of the KCNJ11 gene had a significant 21% increased risk for CV death vs. non-carriers (p=0.00011). ...
