NIH study shows weight loss alone doesn't reduce CV risk

Researchers at NIH's National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) and colleagues reported data from a trial showing that intensive lifestyle intervention focusing on weight loss did not significantly reduce cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in 5,145 overweight or obese Type II diabetics. Specifically, in the open-label, U.S. Look AHEAD trial intervention focusing on weight loss missed the primary endpoint of reducing a composite of death from CV causes, non-fatal myocardial infarction (MI), non-fatal stroke or hospitalization for angina vs. a control group of patients receiving only diabetes support and education (1.83 vs. 1.92 events per 100 person-years; HR=0.95, 95% CI: 0.83, 1.09, p=0.51). ...
