Two reports on embryonic stem cells use

Articles from the NIH and from Rockefeller University published in Science highlighted the use of embryonic stem cells in treating diabetes and neurological conditions. NIH researchers reported the generation of cells that secrete insulin in the presence of glucose in a dose-responsive manner. The cells, derived from an enriched population of mouse embryonic stem cells, exhibited the pharmacokinetics of pancreatic islet cells. The cells formed clusters in vitro, and when grafted subcutaneously into diabetic mice, the mice maintained body weight and survived longer than sham-grafted mice.
